Ocean Pro Boats was started by John in the year 1995. With the promotion by the Malaysian Government, boat building industry was eligible for Pioneer Status concessions with tax free income for the 1st 5 years and other benefits. John has a vision to build a local brand in Malaysia. Ocean Pro is a registered trademark in Malaysia. With collaboration from OMC (Outboard Marine Corporation) Asia – one of the largest boat companies in the world based in the US, John secured the permission to build fibreglass boats in Malaysia using one of OMC’s sportfishing boat hull. The first model was a 27 footer sportfisher with a self bailing and walk a round deck. Located in mid section is also a small cabin under the centre console. As sportfishing and powerboats demand were growing in the early 90s, the design of the Ocean Pro 2700 Sportfishing Boat was an instant success. It was first revealed at the 1997 Malaysian International Boat Show and Ocean Pro sold the most no. of boats in that year during the Boat Show.
Over the next 12 months, the Ocean Pro 3200 Sportsfishing Boat and Commercial Boats were also made. In the late 90s boats were also exported countries like the United Kingdom, Guam, Brunei, Australia and Fiji.
Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) was a maker of Evinrude and Johnson boat motors and many different brands of boats. Evinrude began in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1907. OMC was based in Waukegan,Illinois. They also owned several lines of boats such as Chris Craft, Lowe Boats, Princecraft, Four Winns, SeaSwirl, Stratos, and Javelin. OMC was also a parent company to Ryan, which made lawn mowers. OMC sold 100,000 motors in 2000 and had one third of the outboard market. OMC filed for bankruptcy 22 December 2000 and laid off 7,000 employees.
The currency crisis in the late 90s have a major impact on the demand for leisure boats and end-financing of boats was eventually discontinued by financial institutions. John has in year 2000 sold the boat business.
